The Tsuchinoko (ツチノコ), is a legendary land-dwelling serpent-like cryptid from Japan. The name tsuchinoko is prevalent in Western Japan, including Kansai and Shikoku; the creature is known as bachi hebi in Northeastern Japan.

Tsuchinoko are described as being between a foot to 32 inches (30 and 80 centimeters) in length, similar in appearance to a snake, but with a central girth that is much wider than its head or tail. It is deadly, said to have fangs and venom similar to that of a viper.

Over the past few weeks, people in Japan have been witnessing tadpoles, fish and frogs fall from the sky. Ever since the strange phenomenon was first observed in Ishikawa prefecture on June 4, reports of animal rain have been pouring in from prefectures across the country.
So far, nobody has come up with a plausible explanation for the animal rain. Although some people believe the tadpole showers may be the result of weather disturbances such as waterspouts, no meteorological agencies have observed strong wind or unstable weather conditions in any of the areas where the rain has occurred. Others believe birds may be spitting up large quantities of tadpoles, although many ornithologists dispute this claim. Still others have suggested it may be the work of human pranksters, or even extraterrestrials.

Christopher Foss (born 1946) is a British illustrator and science fiction artist, best known for his science fiction book covers and the illustrations for the original editions of The Joy of Sex.
His evocative science fiction book covers pioneered a much-imitated style featuring vast, colourful spaceships, machines and cities, often marked with mysterious symbols. Human figures are usually absent. These images are suggestive of science fiction in general rather than depictions of specific scenes from books, and therefore can be -- and have been -- used interchangeably on book covers. During the 1970s, Foss's images of future technology had the same iconic "defining" quality that H.R. Giger's would have in terms of depictions of alien or future life forms.
Books featuring Foss illustrations include the 1970s British paperback covers for Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy, the Terran Trade Authority, several Edmund Cooper novels, and E. E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series. Some of the art he did produce was specific to the stories and some examples of this are the covers he did for the Grafton publications of the Demon Princes novels by Jack Vance in the late 1980s, Star King, The Killing Machine, The Palace of Love, The Face and The Book of Dreams.
In 1975 Foss was hired by director Alejandro Jodorowsky for an intended film version of the science-fiction novel Dune by author Frank Herbert. He delivered several conceptual studies published in the book 21st Century Foss, ISBN 90-6332-571-1, containing a foreword by Jodorowsky. The project failed. In 1977 Foss worked for several month on studies for the movie Alien (not being used in the movie) and also did some designs of the planet Krypton for the movie Superman. Some of his crystal structures for the planet were realised in the movie, although they were used as ice-structures.

TOM SAVINI

Pittsburgh born actor/SFX wizard/stuntman/director who did a tour of duty as a combat cameraman in Vietnam, and who has since acquired a remarkable cult following amongst film fans, primarily due to his ground breaking SFX in the "splatter movie" explosion of the early 1980s. Along with fellow special make-up legends Dick Smith and Rob Bottin, Savini was one of the key SFX people behind the startling make-up & EFX seen in the fantasy / horror genre films of the 1980/90s. Savini was heavily influenced by the remarkable silent era actor Lon Chaney, and he sought to emulate the amazing theatrical make-up effects that were a hall mark of Chaney's career. In Savini's insightful book "Grande Illusions", he speaks of his early first attempts at applying prosthetics to his face using "spearmint gum", having misinterpreted that he was meant to actually use 'spirit gum'!

His first work was in low budget fare providing SFX & make up for independently made horror films such as Deranged (1974) and Martin (1977). However, he really caught the attention of horror buffs with his grisly effects in the cult George A. Romero directed zombie film Dawn of the Dead (1978), and then in the controversial slasher film Friday the 13th (1980), the movie generally identified as the kick start for the aforementioned "splatter movie" genre. Savini also contributed the incredible EFX & make-up to other splatter thrillers such as Maniac (1980), The Burning (1981), Creepshow (1982) and Romero's third 'Dead' film, Day of the Dead (1985) (for which he won a Saturn Award).

In 1990, Savini directed his feature film debut Night of the Living Dead (1990), the remake of the original zombie-classic.

Not content with just being behind the lens, Savini has appeared in dozens of films, and can be seen demonstrating his capable acting skills as 'Morgan, the Black Knight' in Knightriders (1981), as 'Blades', one of the biker gang members in Dawn of the Dead (1978), and as 'Sex Machine', another leather clad biker, but this time with a groin mounted gun in the wild vampire film From Dusk Till Dawn (1996).
